Gajner Palace and Wild Life Sanctuary
(35 k.m.)
Gajner is the lake palace of Bikaner It was
built by the 14th ruler of Bikaner State, maharaja Gaj
Singh, who ruled this state from 1746 A.D. to 1787 A.D.
Maharaja Ganga Singh of Bikaner renovated the
whole complex during this reign form 1887 to 1943 A.D., and made it
into a wonderful holiday residence and furnished it with the most
modern fittings. In the beginning it was the summer abode of the ruler
of Bikaner, but now most part of it has been converted into a palace
hotel. (of course some parts of it is still used as a palace by the
royal family of Bikaner.) A part of the palace and the lake are kept
open for the vistors. The lake of Gajner becomes specially
interesting during the winter period when the imperial sand Grouse
migrates here from Siberia (U.S.S.R.) and mangolia.
Arrival of these Siberian birds to this lake is
so fixed as if they are acquainted with dates of calendar. The first
Group of the birds arrives there in the secound week of nov. Similarly
departure of the birds from the area is well set. The birds start
returning to their homeland in the beginning of summer. The peaceful
environment of this area is very interesting therefore you are invited
to be there.
